Monday Yarn Musings

Well I have finished knitting all of the blue skeins and have moved into the blue-greens!  So many beautiful yarns.  Here they are in the order I plan to knit them.  Instead of spending so much time in between knitting each puff to track down the potential name of the colorway, I did all the legwork up front and have it written down.  That should help!

Let’s see, last week I was planning to contact Stephanie from the Etsy store Three Fates Yarn to see if she would be willing to send me a full or half skein of the undyed version of her ‘eponymous’ yarn.  That is the yarn used to create all 48 of the minis so I wanted to make sure they matched.  I messaged her that same Monday afternoon and lo and behold she had a half skein!  It arrived in my mailbox on Saturday afternoon!  All I have done with it so far is simply open the mailing bag, it the skein a squeeze and put it back.  I’m afraid that if I wind it up, I’ll want to play with stripes.  I need to stay focused though!

In other Yarny news, I got my autopay notification from Chiagu so I should be receiving the June shipment of the Koigu mini-skeins any day now!  Pictures of that likely to come next Monday.

Monday Yarny Musings – Gradient Hexipuffs

I am going to try and update my yarn ideas, collections, musings every Monday.  We’ll see that goes, especially once I have both Miss E and Sir W here.  Sir W isn’t set to arrive until mid-July so I should have a few weeks worth of a rhythm to work with.

Yarny Musings

  • Just have to say how much I am enjoying my time knitting with Etsy seller Black Trillium Fibre’s gradient yarn kit.  Not only are the colors gorgeous, but the price is perfect!  I can knit 8-9 hexipuffs per skein so that is 40-45 puffs from one-5 skein pack.  I can hardly decide which one I want to order next, I hope to eventually collect them all!
  • I am always on the lookout for more mini-skein options and am absolutely in love with Etsy seller KnittedWit’s Mini Mania collection.  Unfortunately the price is a bit steep on these ( I believe I calculated it to $3.75 for a 45 yard mini-skein?).  My max for minis is $3 or less each so I will keep looking out.
  • I still absolutely love this highlighter collection from DyeabolicalYarns Highlighter Mini Collection.  $16.50 for five 40 yard skeins. Another great deal!
  • My go to mini shop on Etsy is still Mermaid Knits so I am considering ordering more minis from her too!  I just missed out on an awesome 77 mini-skein collection.  I guess I could contact her to see if she has another!  Here is the collection she named her ‘Biggest Ever.’
  • Still working with Etsy seller ThreeFatesYarns on my custom order – seriously cannot WAIT to see how my mini collection from her turns out!

Yarn Ends on Display!

The majority of the mini-skeins I have are just enough to knit one hexipuff.  This works out absolutely perfectly because I love being able to switch between all of the different colorways as my mood pleases.

There is typically around a yard left of these shorter skeins.  Not really enough to do anyything productive with, but too much to just casually toss away.  (I cringed typing that; yarn is not meant to be thrown away.)

So what is one to do with all of these odd bits of yarn?  Put them on display of course!  I scored a great little jar from a garage sale on Friday and decided it was the best home for my ends!

Do you do anything special with your yarn ends – either what is leftover from the end of a project or those little bits that are left over once all the ends are woven in?

Must have more yarn – Exploring more yarn sources

In keeping with my promise to myself that I can be rewarded with new mini-skeins when I finish 25 puffs, I have been on the lookout for new sources to feed the craving!  A girl can certainly look and favorite, just no buying until 25 puffs are complete!

So where else do I turn to find new sources of minis, but to Etsy!  Here are two sellers I am definitely interested in!

Three Fates Yarn
The yarn from this seller is absolutely gorgeous and I have my eye on two of her mini-skein collections:

  1. Jewel Toned Collection – 10 mini skeins at 10 grams each
There are some less colorful mini-skeins in this collection so that is the other thing that is giving me pause.  I haven’t quite decided if blacks and browns are going to be in this blanket yet.  (Knowing me though, I should probably just get them because I’m bound to change my mind a few times)

  2. Repeatable Colors Assortment of Minis – 24 mini skeins at 5 grams each
The yardage from these skeins is closer to what I need for a mini and I just love the variety of colors!  I hope I am able to reach 25 hexipuffs complete before this sells out!

KimberlyR
Kimberly offers some great custom dyed mini-skein sets.  Many of her color combinations are just to die for.

  1. Black Poppy Mini Skein Custom Order
  2. Speckled Eggs Mini Skein Custom Order
  3. Smokey Mountains Mini Skein Custom Order

I hope she continues to offer more mini-skein sets!
